Otema Darfour Manu and Bright Mensah have developed an innovative solution to improve patient safety and comfort during surgeries, particularly in procedures like ureteroscopy and plasmapheresis. Their project, which focuses on an advanced infusion pump, addresses critical issues in current systems that rely on manual operation. These traditional pumps often lead to errors in fluid levels, temperature regulation, and timing, which can increase the risk of complications and patient discomfort.

The two students created a two-way syringe infusion pump that automatically controls both the delivery and withdrawal of fluids. One of the key features of the device is its built-in warming system, which ensures that fluids are maintained at a consistent temperature throughout the surgery. This is achieved through a closed-loop control system that adjusts in real-time based on the patient’s needs.

This infusion pump is particularly beneficial in procedures like ureteroscopy, where maintaining the right fluid pressure is crucial. Improper pressure control can cause damage to sensitive organs like the kidneys. With the new pump, fluid pressure remains at safe levels without requiring constant manual adjustments, significantly reducing the chance of human error.

In procedures like plasmapheresis, where temperature control is vital, the pump’s warming system ensures that fluids are delivered at the optimal temperature, improving both the efficiency of the procedure and the comfort of the patient.

Supervised by Dr. Isaac Acquah from the Department of Computer Engineering at KNUST, the students believe their innovation has the potential to revolutionize surgical fluid management, not only in Ghana but globally. Their next step is to conduct extensive clinical trials and refine the device for broader surgical applications. They are also exploring the possibility of adapting the technology for use in resource-limited remote healthcare settings.

The team is actively seeking partnerships and support to scale up production and bring this life-saving device to hospitals, aiming to improve patient safety, enhance procedural accuracy, and ultimately, save lives.
